For Donald there is a need to be involved in a very personal, intimate and physical relationship to the subject. She is drawn to specific motifs and recurring subject matter. The act of drawing lies at the heart of what she does, it has become a way of reaching out and finding a direction, it has been a means of establishing critical connections with re-occurring motifs, and given her new ways of seeing, and consequently new ways of making.
